2. What are the recommended system requirements for
Refense VMS - Mobile?
Minimum System Requirements
1 GHz CPU
512 MB RAM
2 GB Disk space
Compatible Microsoft operating system
Network access to the devices to be scanned via Telnet and SSH
3. How do I install the MSDE database?
First, if you do not already have a copy of MSDE it can be obtained from the following location, http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/downloads/default.asp
Next, after the download of the file is complete, double click on the downloaded file, which will
extract the MSDE setup files.Finally, open a command prompt and navigate to the directory where the files were extracted and
enter the following command:
Setup SAPWD=somestrongpassword SecurityMode=SQL
4. How the network device passwords kept secure?
All passwords are secured with the industry standard AES encryption algorithm which provides an advanced level of security and confidentiality that helps maintain the confidentiality of the information.
5. Does Refense VMS support a TACACS, AAA network environment?
Yes, it supports the TACACS environment without any additional software and or configuration; when adding devices simply enter a username and password with privileges to execute the show running-configuration and show version commands and
Refense VMS will use the credentials to access the device. Depending on the configuration of your infrastructure entering an enable password may not be required.
6. I could not scan or add a device, one or both of the following error messages are displayed:
Login to Device IPOrNameofDevice failed! Invalid VTY Username or Password. Please check the credentials and
try again.
Invalid Enable password. Please check the password and try again.Please ensure the proper credentials with sufficient rights are being used. Please note that all passwords are case sensitive. For more information on how to properly set passwords with Cisco devices, please refer to your Cisco documentation.
7. I could not add or scan a specific device, it displayed the error message, Could not connect to the specified device.
Ensure the proper IP address and or hostname is being used for connectivity and the
Refense VMS console has network connectivity to the device and there are no firewall rules and or access lists blocking access on the device or on an intermediary firewall.
8. Adding multiple devices did not complete successfully.
Ensure the file used to add devices is a plain text file and is properly formatted as outlined below:
IPorHostname, DeviceType, GroupName, Protocol, Port, UserName, VTYPassword, EnablePassword
Please note if a username is not required enter the next comma without a space.
9. I could not add a Cisco device via SSH.
Ensure your Cisco device has been properly configured to support SSH connectivity and SSH access to the device from the
Refense VMS console is allowed. For more information on how to properly configure SSH administration within your Cisco device please refer to Cisco documentation.
10. Why is it not possible to add a Proxim/Avaya device via SSH?
Currently Proxim and Avaya devices do not support device management via SSH and therefore the SSH protocol cannot be used to connect to the device.
11. How do I export a report in different formats?
To export a report that is being viewed click on the print icon within the report viewer and the select the print to a file option, then enter a filename and a destination and choose the file type.
12. I cannot use Refense VMS upon startup it displays the error message, License file not found!
Ensure a valid license is present in the same directory as the
Refense VMS installation. To purchase a product license, renew an expired license or obtain a product trial, contact Refense Technologies Sales at 1-888-279-7892
13. How do I install a License?
Place the license file in the same directory at the
Refense VMS installation; ensure the filename ends with a .lic. Then start the
Refense VMS console and click on Tools, then License, then click on Update License and select the license file. After this has completed successfully, restart the
Refense VMS application.
14. Why can’t preconfigured policies be modified?
Preconfigured policies provide out of the box support for detailed scanning and although they cannot be modified, security policies can be created utilizing the preconfigured policies as the base and then saving the policy with a different name.
15. How do I make product suggestions and or enhancement requests?
Product enhancement requests and suggestions can be emailed to support@refense.com and or submitted via the Customer Center web form.
16. How do I request additional checks and or modification to existing checks to support my infrastructure?
