1. What is Refense VMS?
Refense VMS is part of Refense Technologies suite of vulnerability management products. It is the first commercial product created solely for detecting security vulnerabilities within wireless and wired network devices.

Major features and benefits include:

  • Automated Scheduled Scans
  • In depth reporting
  • Completely customizable and preconfigured policies
  • Support for market leading network devices
  • Scalable to support the largest enterprise networks
  • Supports wireless access points from Cisco, Proxim and Avaya

2. What is the difference between Refense VMS and traditional vulnerability scanners?
Refense VMS incorporates advanced patent-pending ComparaSec™ technology that enables its scanning engine to be hardware and software intelligent and as opposed to traditional vulnerability scanners, is completely non-intrusive. Typically, traditional vulnerability scanners only scratch the outer layers of a network device and cannot detect most vulnerabilities internal to the devices. By utilizing the intelligent scanning engine, Refense VMS has the ability to probe into the device and will discover vulnerabilities deep within the device, such as WPA encryption not being enabled, lack of BGP authentication, unencrypted passwords and much more.

3. Doesn't my existing vulnerability assessment product provide this functionality?
No, today the existing vulnerability assessment products only address operating systems, databases, web servers, etc, but fail to address the most critical portion of your IT Infrastructure, your network devices. Refense VMS is a focused solution specifically created to secure network devices and help ensure compliance to security policies, standards and regulations.

4. Which devices are supported by Refense VMS?
Currently, Refense VMS supports network devices, specifically routers, switches and wireless access points; from leading manufacturers like Cisco, Juniper, Extreme, Avaya and Proxim. Additionally, many customer security scripts/checks are available to satisfy specific network configurations.

5. How can Refense VMS help me secure my wireless network?
Ensuring wireless access points are properly and securely configured is critical to maintaining the security of your network and Refense has developed an extensive array of wireless security checks were created to scan for a multitude of wireless security items such as encryption, authentication, insecure services, unfiltered access, and insecure device management. This support provides the assurance and peace of mind to ensure your wireless devices are securely configured and do not provide an open door for attackers into your network.

6. Can Refense VMS support my large network?
Yes, Refense VMS can scale to support the largest networks consisting of thousands of routers, switches, wireless access points and other devices and was designed for the requirements of enterprise networks.

7. How does Refense VMS keep the passwords and other data secure?
The U.S Government recommended and approved 128 bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm is utilized to secure all usernames, passwords and other sensitive data. By utilizing this strong encryption standard, Refense VMS maintains the confidentiality of the data.

8. How is Refense VMS updated?
Updates are provided by our Security Threat Research center which performs research to support newer features and versions of our supported products and simultaneously monitors current security vulnerabilities. Based upon the research and customer feedback, program updates and security checks are provided periodically.

9. Will Refense VMS be intrusive and what performance impact does it have the devices?
No, the application is completely non-intrusive has no performance impact on the device as only the show running-config, show version and show interfaces commands are executed in Privileged EXEC mode. All scanning intelligence and processing is performed on the Network Device Scanner console.

10. How will Refense VMS help me comply with my security policies and or government regulations?
In depth research was performed to create preconfigured policies that support industry best practices, standards and regulations. This provides the ability out of the box to quickly and easily perform scans and receive detailed results of the scan. Most importantly, Network Device Scanner allows for full customization of security policies to ensure compliance with your specific standards and policies.
